ST. IGNACE — Thanks to the use of life jackets, three canoers are safe after a scare yesterday evening on Lake Huron.

Deputies from the Mackinac County Sheriff’s Office say they, along with the Mackinac Island Marine Rescue and Coast Guard, responded to an overturned canoe in the lake around 6 p.m. near Rabbits Back Point in St. Ignace.

The canoe’s occupants, a 57 year–old man and his two grand children, were subsequently spilled into Lake Huron. The grandfather reported that the canoe started taking on water from the stern about 400 yards from shore.

Rescue units were able to pull them from the water within 20 minutes of receiving the call.

The use of life jackets and quick responses from the emergency crew made the rescue successful.
