Helicopter helps with the heavy lifting

ISLE ROYALE — Crews on one Upper Peninsula island are using a unique tool to help with some heavy lifting.

Isle Royale National Park officials say they’re getting some help from a helicopter to move 64 tons of bridging planks and logs to remote trail locations on the island. They’re calling the event ‘Project Heavy Lift,’ and its purpose is to address problems along the park’s trails.

After the airlift, crews on the ground get to move all of that material two or three more times by hand to build boardwalks and bridges. Weather did delay the project a bit, but officials hope to have everything moved in by the end of this week.
