Habitat Groundbreaking in Laurium

It’s a true shovel–ready project.

Theresa and Mark Sakkinen have been living in Copper City, but they’ll soon have a brand new home built by the Copper Country chapter of Habitat for Humanity.

A groundbreaking ceremony was held yesterday on the lot of the future house on Ahmeek Street in Laurium, and the Sakkinens say they can’t wait.

Amy Hughes, president of Copper Country Habitat, says that even though the house is provided by their organization, the Sakkinens still need to earn it.

They have to put in hundreds of hours of sweat equity of helping build the house and even though their mortgage is interest-free, they still will have to pay it off like any other mortgage.
