Construction Skills Challenge

Ready, set, build!

High school students from across the upper peninsula get a first–hand look at what a day of work in the construction trades might be like.

The U.P. Construction Council, local building trades and the Northern Michigan Constructors hosted the Construction Skills Challenge.

It exposes students to the real world of the construction business.

The field needs many new workers — U.P. Construction Council executive director Tony Retaskie says many workers in both construction and construction management are getting on in years, and the trades need large numbers of younger people to take over those skilled positions.

Thirteen student teams took part, a record for the event.

They knew going in that they had to build something, but they didn’t know it would be a storage shed until they arrived.

Dickinson–Iron Team 1 took first place.

Marquette Senior High School Team 2 finished second, and MSHS Team One came in third.

Congratulations to all the teams on a building job well done!
