Escanaba Coal Worries Easing

Escanaba city officials say the coal situation that caused them to announce an electric rate hike is settling back down.

Earlier this week, the city got a shipment of coal big enough to keep the plant supplied right through March.

City officials are optimistic the 2 further boatloads of coal called for in their current contract will come in by New Year’s.

Coal prices are also gradually coming down.

The city’s electricity advisory committee is getting together next Wednesday night for an update on the 2 remaining options to provide for future energy needs.

Those are to buy electricity wholesale or to sell the 50-year-old power plant.
