Dunham returns to NMU as Assistant Coach
MARQUETTE – Northern Michigan University head women’s basketball coach Troy Mattson announced Monday the hiring of former NMU and Wisconsin player Mariah Dunham.
Dunham, a native of Watertown, Wis., spent the 2013-14 season as an assistant coach at Lake Superior State.
“We are very excited to have Mariah join our NMU Women’s Basketball coaching staff,” said Mattson. “She has playing and coaching experience in the GLIAC and more importantly knows how we do things here at NMU!”
In her one season as a student-athlete at NMU, Dunham led the Wildcats with a 14.1 scoring average and was second on the team averaging 5.2 rebounds per game en route to earning Second Team All-Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference honors.
During that season, the Wildcats went 22-10 overall with a 16-6 GLIAC record, while advancing to the championship game of the GLIAC Tournament and the second round of the NCAA Division II Women’s Basketball Championship.
Dunham transferred to NMU from Wisconsin for her senior season. During two-and-a half seasons with the Badgers, Dunham racked up 600 points and 349 rebounds. Dunham graduated from NMU in 2011 with a bachelor’s degree in communications studies.
Prior to her time at Lake Superior State, Dunham led the Baraga Junior High Boys to a league championship in 2010 before moving on to become the first female head coach of a high school boys team in the Upper Peninsula when she was named the Baraga High School varsity boys coach in 2011. That season, she also volunteered as an assistant coach with Finlandia University before closing out her time at Baraga as the varsity girls basketball coach in 2012.
She also has four years of AAU experience as the head coach of the Wisconsin Lady Shooters, a team for 13-16 year old girls.
