Coming Out Day at NMU

Northern Michigan University participated today in an international event showing support of National Coming Out Day.

Instead of the traditional gold and green, NMU asked students, faculty and staff members around campus to wear red.

The Multicultural Education and Resource Center and the group Allies handed out symbolic red shirt pins for students.

Shirley Brozzo of NMU Allies says the group’s goal is to offer visible support for a safe university environment for faculty, staff, and students who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgendered.

Outlook President Joshua Garnett says the red shirts and pins are also a show of support for people who’ve committed suicide because of the way they were treated for being in the LGBT community.

Today is also the 25th anniversary of the day the AIDS Memorial Quilt was displayed to the public for the first time in Washington, DC.
