Breitung Schools Plan for Teacher Layoffs

A southern U.P. school district is hurting for cash so badly that it’s planning to lay off nearly 1 out of 5 of its teachers.

The Breitung Township Schools are planning to let 20 teachers go.

It’s part of more than $1.3 million in budget cuts they’re planning to make for this fall.

Superintendent Craig Allen says the district is running a quarter-million-dollar deficit this year without any reserve cash on hand to make up the difference.

The township is also expecting to lose 60 students over the summer, which means nearly a half-million dollars in state aid.
