Bait regulations for deer hunters

Hunters sometimes get overly anxious to bag a buck, and sometimes they even bend or break the rules.

Experts say to be sure that you’re hunting during the designated times and that you don’t put out more bait than what’s allowed. These and other violations can cost you anywhere from $50 to $2,500. You can also get up to 180 days in jail and have your hunting license revoked.

Michigan DNR Conservation Officer Ryan Aho says, “That’s one of the things I do see quite often where you do see a large bait pile that is over the two-gallon limit. A really big mature Michigan buck will dress out at right around 160-180 pounds. It is good to have a helper if you have a long drag.”

The Department of Natural Resources has put together a list of 10 tips for a safe outdoor experience during the firearm deer season, and we’ve posted the list elsewhere on our website.
