Iron Range Roll goes virtual for 2020
MARQUETTE COUNTY — Organizers of one popular annual event have found a way to keep their plans in place, while adapting to changes due to the pandemic.
June 5-7 will be the 7th annual Iron Range Roll, but this will be the first year the event is held virtually.
The Iron Range Roll is a point-to-point bike race. Normally, the race would begin at the Cliffs Shaft Mine Museum in Ishpeming and end at the Marquette Commons.
Participants are encouraged to ride on the Iron Ore Heritage Trail, but they’re allowed to bike a route of their own choosing for this year’s race, as long as they meet the 16 mile requirement.
These changes allow the race to go on as planned with adjustments, instead of being cancelled like so many other events.
“This is just a way for us to keep the event going on in whatever way we’re able to do it,” said Iron Range Roll co-chair Daniel Croney. “The first Saturday in June is always National Trails Day, so we’re trying to keep that date and keep it on or around that day. And this is just one way for us to do that, even though we can’t do it all together.”
