Menominee falls in state title game

Updated at 7:10 p.m.: In a rematch of a state semifinal game a year ago, Grand Rapids West Catholic defeated Menominee this time in the MHSAA Division 5 football championship game today at Ford Field, 27-14.

The game was tied 7-7 at halftime. The turning point in the game was a fake field goal attempt by the Falcons that ended being a 30-yard touchdown pass. GRWC led 14-7 after the third quarter.

The Falcons pulled away in the fourth quarter, thanks to two quick touchdowns by quarterback Travis Russell. He scored on a 25-yard run and on a 45-yard pass to Drake Wooten to make it 27-7 GRWC.

Menominee didn’t give up. Down 21 points, Justin Brilinski scored a touchdown from 1-yard out to make it 27-14 in favor of the Falcons.

The Maroons finished the season with a 13-1 record.

Updated at 6:21 p.m.: The Maroons have some work to do in the MHSAA Division 5 football championship game. Menominee trails Grand Rapids West Catholic, 14-7 as the game heads to the fourth quarter.

Grand Rapids West Catholic scored a touchdown with 3:26 remaining in the third quarter. Instead of kicking a 36-yard field goal, GRWC executed a fake field goal to perfection, scoring on a 30-yard touchdown pass to give the Falcons a 14-7 lead.

Menominee and Grand Rapids West Catholic are tied 7-7 at halftime of the MHSAA Division 5 football championship game at Ford Field.

Grand Rapids West Catholic scored the first touchdown of the game midway through the second quarter. Falcons quarterback Travis Russell connected with wide receiver David Bancuk for the touchdown, giving Grand Rapids West Catholic a 7-0 lead.

The Maroons were able to tie up the game with 2:18 to go until halftime. Maroons tailback James Brown scored and third and goal from the 1-yard line to tie the game at 7-7. A 16-yard run by Justin Brilinski setup the short touchdown run by Brown.
