North Dakota woman killed in Alger Co. crash

The investigation is continuing into a two car accident this morning that claimed one life.

Troopers from the Munising Detachment of the Michigan State Police say the accident occurred at approximately 7:35 am on M-28, about one mile west of Munising.

The victim has been identified as Sarah Frances Gunderson, 25, of Thompson, North Dakota.  Police say Gunderson was driving a 2008 Ford Focus westbound on M-28 when her vehicle was hit by an eastbound 2006 Pontiac G6 driven by Richard Vanverschaegen, 31, of Munising.

Gunderson died at the scene.  Vanverschaegen was transported to Marquette General Hospital by Alger County EMS with non life threatening injuries.

The preliminary investigation indicates the eastbound vehicle crossed the center line of the highway.  Police say both drivers were wearing seatbelts and alcohol does not appear to be a factor in the crash.

Assisting at the scene:  Munising Police Department, Munising Fire Department and Alger County Extrication Unit.
