Fatal car accident in Iron Mountain

IRON MOUNTAIN — The Iron Mountain Police Department reports a woman is dead after a single-vehicle crash early Thursday morning.

It happened on US-2 near 6th St. around 12:15 a.m.

Authorities say a 68-year-old woman from Iron Mountain was driving southbound on US-2 when her car left the roadway, struck a guy wire on a power pole, spun out of control and careened back across the highway, and eventually hit a garage.

The woman was taken to Dickinson County Hospital where she was later pronounced dead.

Police believed that the crash was caused by a preexisting medical condition, and the woman’s death is a result of the preexisting medical condition and not the crash. The official cause of death is yet to be determined by the Dickinson County Medical Examiner.

The Iron Mountain Fire Department and Iron Mountain Police Department were assisted on scene by an accident investigator from the Michigan State Police as well as Beacon Ambulance Service.
