When you think of triathlons, you may think of running, biking or swimming, but an Ishpeming man has other ideas.
Randall Wellings of Straight Line Archery is organizing what he calls the Sportsman’s Triathlon. Teams of four will compete in nine holes of golf, a round of trap shooting and 25 rounds of pop-up targets with a bow and arrow. But the event isn’t just for serious hunters.
“Anybody can participate; you just gotta get four guys,” Wellings said. “It’s what we classify as very inexpensive because you actually do get lunches and dinners and golf fees, and trap range and all that stuff covered by the entry fee, so it’s very affordable in real terms, and as I say, it’s the most fun you can have that’s still legal.”
Although the triathlon will be lots of fun, it also supports a few worthy causes. Proceeds from the event will support the Wounded Warrior fund and UPAWS, but you don’t have to compete in all three events to participate. Anyone can come down and do a speed round of target shooting to support Wounded Warriors or the 25 rounds of pop-up targets for UPAWS.
The triathlon will be held this weekend. The shooting events will take place at the Negaunee Rod and Gun Club on Saturday, and the golfing portion will be held at Wanonowin Golf Club on Sunday.
