High-speed chase and domestic violence suspects appear in court

A high speed chase suspect and a man accused of domestic assault appeared in Houghton County District Court Wednesday.

Amber Smith, 22, is charged with fleeing and eluding and unlawfully driving away of a motor vehicle.  Both charges are felonies and punishable by up to ten years in prison.

Judge Mark Wisti bound Smith’s case over to circuit court and gave the Georgia native permission to leave the state.  Her next court date set for May 19.

Joel Michaelson, 28, also appeared in court.

He is charged with one felony count of interfering with electronic communications and one count of domestic violence.  Michaelson waived his right to a preliminary hearing in 14 days.  His next court date is scheduled for June 4.
