Winter socks for residents in need

Students throughout Marquette County will be collecting new winter socks this week to help area residents in need.

The collection drive is called Rock the Socks, and it’s taking place on Thursday.

The idea came from students at Marquette Alternative High School.

They thought of Rock the Socks after attending the Zonta Club of Marquette’s annual dinner, at which they were each presented new socks as a gift.

The students wanted to collect more socks for the homeless and low-income residents, but they didn’t want to stop with their own school.

They reached out across Marquette County, asking if other students wanted to take part, and every school that they asked said ‘yes’.

Marquette Senior High School, Superior Hills Elementary, Sandy Knoll Elementary, Negaunee High School, Gwinn High School, Ishpeming High School, Westwood High School and North Star Academy are all joining in.

Collection boxes for the socks will be outside the main offices of each school on Thursday.

The socks each school collects will go to a charity of that school’s choice.
