U. P. 200: accident in Alger Co.

This team was photographed Sunday afternoon approaching the Welcome Center in Harvey, just three miles from the finish line of the U. P. 200.

One dog was killed and two injured when a team competing in the U. P. 200 was hit by a pickup truck early this morning in Alger County.

Troopers from the Munising Detachment of the Michigan Stare Police say it happened about 5:40 a.m. The crash occurred on M-28 near the Cherrywood Lodge in Wetmore when a sled dog team inadvertently crossed the highway in front of an oncoming pickup truck.

The truck was driven by a 65 year old man from Canada.  The driver had slowed down prior to the crash but was unable to avoid striking the sled dog team.

Minor damage was done to the pickup truck.  Police say the driver of the vehicle had the right of way at the time of the crash and was not cited for any traffic offense.
