Two Men Jailed in Bank Robbery Attempt -Suspect Still Sought in Oct 12 Robbery

Houghton County officials have two men in custody in connection with the attempted robbery of the Superior National Bank in Chassell on Saturday.

The Houghton County Sheriff’s department says it happened at 11:54 a.m. Saturday at the Superior National Bank.

The suspects were apprehended within about three hours. The investigation into the incident is continuing and further information will be released Sunday afternoon or Monday morning.

The Chocolay Township (Marquette County) Police do not believe the Houghton County incident is related to the October 12 armed robbery in Harvey.

The search continues for the unmasked suspect who made off with an undisclosed amount of money in the hold-up at the Northern Michigan Bank and Trust. At 1:15 pm that day, a man in his late 20’s or early 30’s walked into the Chocolay branch at the Gateway Plaza near the intersection of U.S. 41 and M-28 and calmly asked for money.

The Caucasian man was wearing glasses and a green zip-up fleece hoodie. The man asked a teller to fill up a bag he put on the counter. The teller hesitated for a moment, saying, “Yeah, right.” Police say that’s when the man showed the female teller a black pistol in his right hand.

The suspect was in and out of the bank in under two minutes. Bank employees described the man as about 6’2 and between 200 and 220 pounds. They say the man left on foot, headed north.

A photograph of a necklace believed to have a connection to the case has been released by police. (photo available by clicking on the story below titled, “Jewelry May Help Police in Robbery Investigation.”) Authorities want to speak to the driver of a green Chevrolet Malibu whose vehicle was seen in the Gateway Plaza parking lot near the time of the robbery.

Police from Marquette County and the Federal Bureau of Investigation have been searching for the suspect. Police are following up on a number of tips but are still asking that anyone with information contact the Chocolay Township Police department at 906.249.4040 or their local law enforcement agency.
