Trade skills summer camps heading to Jacobetti Complex

MARQUETTE — Middle and high school students hoping to learn more about technical careers will have an opportunity to do just that this summer.

NMU’s office of Continuing Education and Workforce Development is hosting a series of project-based summer camps for students grade seven and up to explore possible future career paths in the skilled trades.

“What we’ve found is that young people don’t get a lot of exposure to the skilled trades positions, and there’s many out there,” said JoLene Klumpp, Associate Director of Continuing Education and Workforce Development. “In fact, employers are really crying for people in those fields. So what we thought we would do is put together some camps — day camps — that would expose young people to the trades early on.”

The camps present subjects like building technology and welding in addition to some other unique trades.

“We also have our C.S.I. camp. We have the police academy here at Jacobetti, and then there is culinary arts and cosmetology,” Klumpp added.

The hands-on camps run from July 13th though the 16th at NMU’s Jacobetti Complex, and each camp costs $60. Organizers are hoping to get quite a few students to sign up for the camps’ inaugural year.
