Recruiting High Schoolers into Health Care

Local organizations want to strengthen the local health care workforce.

And they’re doing that by recruiting high school students.

The U.P. Health Education Corporation has brought back its Area Geriatric Education Scholars program, also known as AGES.

AGES is a summer program for high school juniors and seniors.

In many parts of the state, health care is the #1 employment sector, and local organizations see the need for the field in the U.P.

Students in the AGES program get training and experience, and the program gets to recruit potential health care employees.

With unemployment in the state sitting at 15%, teens are now competing with adults for summer jobs.

But AGES takes a different approach with the teens.

Plus, the participants are paid during their involvement in the program.
