NMU Women to host #1 Ashland

MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University women’s basketball team will tip-off 2013 by hosting two Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference games from the Berry Events Center this weekend. The ‘Cats will face No. 1-ranked Ashland University on Thursday (Jan. 3) at 7:30 p.m. and Lake Erie College on Saturday (Jan. 5) at 3 p.m.

NMU enters the week at 7-3 overall and 4-2 in the GLIAC after its last competition on Dec. 18, in which Northern was defeated 75-63 by Tiffin University. Sophomore guard Laruen Gruber leads the ‘Cats averaging 12 points a game, while sophomore guard Alyssa Colla averages 11. Freshman forward Nea Makela leads the boards with six per game, and sophomore forward Abbey DeBruin averages five.

Ashland is a perfect 13-0 on the season and 6-0 in conference play. The Eagles have three players who average double figures per game. Kari Daugherty leads with a 23.6 average, Daiva Gerbec with 12.5 and Alyssa Miller with 10.8. Daugherty also leads on the boards averaging 15 in each contest, and Gerbec with 8.2.

Lake Erie (2-6; 0-5 GLIAC) is still searching for its first GLIAC victory entering Saturday’s matchup. The Storm fell to Cleveland State, 70-51 in a non-conference game on Sunday (Dec. 30). Ashar Harris averages 16 points per game for the Storm, along with 13.9 rebounds.
