Negaunee School Board Ballot Mistake

The Negaunee Public Schools Board of Education had to fix a mistake Monday night that was left over from Election Night.

Two open positions were on the ballot two weeks ago that involved the winners serving full six–year terms.

However, there should have been three board positions on the ballot instead of two.

Vice president Greg Toutant’s position did not appear on the ballot because of what Superintendent Jim Derocher calls a clerical error by his office.

Because Toutant had been appointed to the school board since the last election in 2010, his position should have been up for a vote this year.

But the election results have already been certified as official without that happening.

The other board members re–appointed Toutant to his seat until the 2014 election, at which point his position will appear on the ballot.

Derocher also says he’s expecting the district to have many more kindergarteners next fall than it has classroom space for.

The district will be working on that through the remainder of the school year.
