Marquette Schools name interim superintendent

The Marquette Area Public Schools Board of Education accepted the resignation Wednesday of Superintendent Deborah L. Veiht during a special meeting.  It will be effective June 30, 2013.  Veiht has accepted a position as Superintendent of the Marquette-Alger Regional Educational Services Agency (MARESA).  Veiht has been with the district for 27 years.

In her resignation letter, she thanked the current board and past Boards of Education, for having faith in her as a teacher, grant director, principal, assistant superintendent and superintendent saying,  “Throughout my 27-year tenure with MAPS, I have been pleased to see the district evolve into such a stellar institution.”

Replacing Veiht is William Saunders, current Bothwell Middle School Principal.  Saunders was appointed interim superintendent in a unanimous decision at the special meeting.   He will serve in that capacity until June 30, 2014.   The board also accepted his request for a one year leave of absence from his current position of Bothwell Principal.

“I am excited to accept the role of Superintendent for the 2013-2014 school year through which I hope to affect positive change for our more than 3,000 MAPS students.  I will approach this position with the same energy, vigor, and enthusiasm I have tried to bring to Bothwell every day over the last five school years,” Saunders said.
