Marquette County police agencies participating in seat belt checks

The Marquette County Sheriff’s Department is teaming up with other local police agencies to make sure drivers are wearing their seat belts.

The sheriff’s office received a grant from the Michigan Office of Highway Safety Planning to enforce seat belt checks on certain days of the year.  Deputies were checking seat belts on US-41 in Negaunee Wednesday.

The Michigan State Police, the Chocolay Township Police Department and the Marquette City Police Department are also participating in the effort.

Signs are posted on days when police departments will be conducting seatbelt checks.

A seatbelt violation is a $65 ticket. If someone has multiple seatbelt violations, tickets are still $65 and do not increase.
