HARRIS- Round 1 of the Island Resort Championship at the Sweetgrass Golf Course in Harris is in the record books. 12 players are under par after the first 18-holes of the 54-hole tournament.

Marquette native Avery Rochester was one of two amateur golfers in the field of 144. Rochester finished the day with an 84 (+12). She shot a 42 on the front nine and a 42 on the back nine. Rochester hit 12 of the 14 fairways at Sweetgrass, but she struggled making putts the entire round.

“I just wasn’t trusting my line today,” said Rochester about her work on the greens. “I did hit the ball good off of the tee and I had a lot of up and downs to save par.”

Although the day didn’t go her way, the 18-year-old Columbia College golfer still enjoyed herself out there on the course.

“It was a lot of fun. I learned a lot from them. I really think I can take away some great lessons from playing with them,” Rochester said.

Lee Lopez of Whittier, Calif. shot a 68 (-4) to lead after round one. She leads four other players who are tied at -3. Round 2 begins on Saturday. The third and final round is Sunday.
