High school select choir performs at NMU
Talented high school singers from across the Upper Peninsula joined forces for a choral performance at Northern Michigan University on Saturday.
About 60 students form the Superior Select Choir each year. Students from eight different high schools are part of it.
After auditions, the group has just one weekend to rehearse at Bay Cliff Health Camp in Big Bay before performing.
“Pretty much practice all the way through the weekend, and it’s a really good time,” Houghton High School senior Joe Dobbs said. “It’s a really awesome program. I have a really good time. I’ve been here three years, and it’s incredible every year.”
NMU music faculty members accompanied the high schoolers during the concert with various instruments. While they practice, NMU students serve as counselors.
“The kids work so hard, and they’re putting all of their heart and soul into the music, and they practice on their own, too,” choir counselor and NMU junior Victoria Gabrielsen said. “We have a lot of laughs, and it’s fun to be around them.”
The choir is part of the Superior School Music Association, which promotes awareness of the need for music programs in Upper Peninsula schools.
