Governor’s Council endorses Pictured Rocks Road Race

Munising, MI – The Governor’s Council on Physical Fitness, Health and Sports has recognized the 38th Annual Pictured Rocks Road Race/Race to Remember as a quality physical activity event. As a result, the Pictured Rocks Road Race will be included in the Pure Michigan FITness Series endorsement program.

The Pictured Rocks Road Race will be held June 23.  This U.P. racing tradition has become popular with fans throughout the mid-West and beyond.  It includes a half Marathon, 5K run and Fun Walk begin starting at 8:00 a.m.  Held along the streets of Munising and the woods and shorelines of Lake Superior, runners and spectators will find top notch competition, un-matched natural beauty, and exceptional small town hospitality.

The Pure Michigan FITness Series endorses local, regional and state events to acknowledge an organization’s ability to plan and carry out a quality event that significantly contributes to the health and well-being of Michigan residents.  Pictured Rocks Road Race exemplifies this core value and is endorsed by the Governor’s Council.

“By endorsing local events all across the state, we hope to bring attention to the importance of physical activity and encourage our citizens to take responsibility for their health,” said Marilyn Lieber, president and CEO of the Governor’s Council. “These local events can have a tremendous impact on health care costs that present a significant challenge for our state’s economy.”

“The Alzheimer’s Association and amcab/Senior Meals are thrilled to put on this exceptional event that brings people into the Munising community to enjoy its best features! We are grateful for the support of so many volunteers and businesses for their contributions and the help it brings to our agencies as well,” state Ruth Almen, Regional Director for the Alzheimer’s Association.

In order to become an endorsed event, an organization must complete an application form for review. Some criteria that is taken into consideration includes providing a positive, safe physical activity experience using qualified officials and benefiting a nonprofit or charitable organization.
