Five children injured in ATV accident

Six people, including five children, have taken to the hospital following an ATV accident in Houghton County.

The Houghton County Sheriff’s Department says the accident happened around 3 p.m. Friday at the intersection of U.S. 41 and Lower Massie Road in Chassell Township.

A Polaris RZR side-by-side, driven by a thirteen-year-old girl, attempted to cross U.S. 41 from Lakeshore Drive to Lower Massie Road.  She pulled out onto the path of a minivan driven by Barbara Wells, 67, from Chassell.

Police say five children, with ages ranging from thirteen to three, were riding in the ATV.  Four children were ejected from the side-by-side.

The five children, along with Wells, were transported to Portage Health for the treatment of unknown injuries.  Two passengers in the minivan were uninjured.

The accident remains under investigation.

Mercy Ambulance, Chassell Township First Responders, and Dave’s Towing all assisted at the scene.
