Dinner to Re-Open the ‘W’

Hungry people bring hearty appetites to the Gwinn VFW post over the weekend, chowing down to raise money.

Community Hand-Up hosted a spaghetti dinner Saturday night, raising money to re-open the ‘W’.

The group says it needs $100,000 to do that.

Organizers say they’ve already raised about a third of that amount.

They’d need about $50,000 to re-open the doors and then would save the other 50.

Community Hand-Up Director Lisa Johnson says the $50,000 that they’d spend would cover things like necessary renovations to the building and utility bills.

She says they’re hoping the remainder would be enough working capital to supplement membership revenue and program revenue.

Community Hand-Up is planning a pancake breakfast for the near future along with other, similar events.

Johnson also says they’re aggressively pursuing local and state grants.

The ‘W’, the South County Community and Fitness Center, closed its doors at K.I. Sawyer last May because of a lack of funds.
