Copper Dog 150 Update

The hottest event of the winter has arrived as the Copper Country’s only sled dog race is set to get underway.

The much-anticipated weekend is finally here—the CopperDog150 Sled Dog Race begins tonight in Calumet. 30 teams with ten sled dogs each will compete in the 150-mile trek up and down the Keweenaw Peninsula.

It’s the third year of race, and it looks to be the best one yet. Recent winter storms have dumped some much needed snow for the dogs to run on so the trails should be primed and ready for the race.

Calumet will rocking as enthusiasts pour in from all over. A huge street party precedes the 6:30 pregame ceremonies. The dogs will hit the trail with the musher in tow starting at 7pm.

Then it’s off to Eagle Harbor—but not a straight run—the trail takes the teams through the Lake Linden and Gay areas.

Saturday morning at 9, the mushers head up to Copper Harbor where a day’s worth of activities for spectators is planned.

One night of rest only – then it’s back down to Calumet in one straight shot starting at 9am and wrapping up there with the closing ceremonies at 3.

ABC Ten and CW 5 will bring you updates throughout the weekend . And be sure to tune in on Monday for the results and a recap of the race.
