Charity group to disband after misleading donors
LANSING — A settlement has been reached against a downstate charity that state authorities say mislead donors.
Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette announced the settlement this morning against Firefighters Support Services of Wyandotte. According to a release from Schuette’s office, the group used deceptive phone calls to raise over $4 million, claiming the funds went to help firefighters and the victims of fire.
As it turns out, more than ninety percent went to things like salaries and undisclosed programs. The settlement requires the group’s three directors to pay $144,000 over the next three years.
The group will also be dissolved within the next two months.
