AMCAB obtains new heating assistance funds
There’s good news for Marquette and Alger County residents who’ve had a hard time staying warm this winter. AMCAB says they’ve received $350,000 in additional state heating assistance funding.
The Michigan Department of Human Services and the Bureau of Community Action and Economic Opportunity have sent $11 million in assistance funding across the state. AMCAB is one of 29 Michigan community action agencies to receive the money.
“This is specifically for those individuals that are low-income and have deliverable fuels,” AMCAB executive director Earl Hawn said. “Deliverable fuels would be wood, propane, kerosene, oil, wood pellets.”
Hawn is asking anyone running low on any of those types of fuels to contact AMCAB, or their own local community action agency, for help before reaching the critical stage.
“We’re absolutely delighted that the state recognized this is a particularly difficult heating season, and it’s particularly difficult on those individuals who can least afford having a season like this hit them,” he said.
It can take several days to process a heating assistance request because of high demand and limited availability from vendors.
