10 acre Marquette Co. fire is contained

A forest fire burning for several hours today in Marquette County’s Chocolay Township is contained.  The blaze is, according to Department of Natural Resources personnel, scorched about ten acres of woodland between the Ojibwa Casino and Lake Le Vasseur, one mile east of Kawbawgam Road just off Snowmobile Trail 417.IMG_3285

Firefighters are still on the scene and have succeeded in containing what was initially reported as a brush fire just after 11:30 a.m. A DNR plane is checking the area to provide a bird’s eye view for the fire and rescue team on the ground…and to check for other fires in the area.

Fire crews and police personnel are asking those who do not live on Kawbawgam Road to stay off of it in order to keep traffic at a minimum as emergency vehicles continue to navigate the area.  Fire crews and equipment from DNR offices in Gwinn, Harvey, Ishpeming, Escanaba and Shingleton, as well as from Chocolay Township, Marquette, Sands Township have established a containment line around the fire.  Mop-up operations are continuing, spraying water and foam on the fire. The Salvation Army is also on hand, assisting the firefighters.IMG_3280
