2020 Dale Phillips Invitational

MARQUETTE — Presque Isle Park was the location for the 2020 Dale Phillips Invitational on Friday, September 4th.

Division one competed first in the three mile run. Schools in that division are Marquette, Ishpeming (westwood), Negaunee, Escanaba, Houghton, Calumet, Kingsford, and Menominee.

Carson and Colin Vanderschaaf, brothers who attend Marquette Senior High School, took first and second place respectively. Carson was first with a time of 17.44 and Colin was second with a time of 17.51.

“It was pretty tough, it gets pretty windy out so you can really feel that on some stretches,” said Colin Vanderschaaf, sophomore runner at Marquette. “It was a really good race between me and my brother and the kid from Escanaba. We were pushing it the entire race. I really like running and me and my brother are pretty competitive so that helps a lot.”

Division one girls started five minutes after. In first place was Westwood sophomore Heidi Meglathery with a time of 21.21.

Meglathery said that she felt like she could’ve ran faster on this track, but is happy to be competing at all despite being in the middle of an pandemic.

“I feel really blessed,” Meglathery said. “I know people are struggling because they don’t have a sport to play. But cross country is very beautiful because you do get to be with your team but you also get to push yourself while being close to your friends.”

Divisions two and three were later in the day. Ephram Evans from Newberry took first place for the boys with a time of 18:23.4 and Lola Korpi of Ishpeming took first place on the girls side with a time of 20:11.
