Egyptian Scholar visits NMU
MARQUETTE – Visiting scholar Osama Medany from Egypt enlightened Northern Michigan University students Thursday evening. The presentation is part of the “Art and Revolution in the Middle East and North African” mini–lecture series. With all of the unrest in Egypt, Medany gave students a real life synopsis of life in Egypt. He discussed the civil liberties that have been taken away and how many are using art as an outlet.
“The dictator has fallen, the tyrant has conceded to the will of the people. Decades of darkness have given way to the dawn of our revolution. Through the eyes of the young and old I see hope for a new Egypt. The same hope that these eyes have seen torture and mutilation at the hands of the regime. I thank you my dear friends for standing with us in our quest for salvation. I call upon you to continue to support us in this historic moment,” said, Osama Medany, who is a professor at Minoufiya University.
The lecture series is sponsored by the College of Arts and Sciences, the Black Student Union, Department of History, English and modern languages and literature departments.
