NMU Soccer Hands Tech First Loss
HOUGHTON, Mich. – Senior Kari Buckel scored one goal and assisted on Northern Michigan’s other three goals to lift the Wildcats to a 4-1 victory over Michigan Tech in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference soccer opener for both schools Wednesday (Sept. 8) at Sherman Field.
“We dug ourselves into a hole tonight,” said head coach Michelle Jacob. “We did not connect on our passes and we did not find our marks on defense. I would like to thank the large crowd that turned out again tonight to support us.”
Northern got on the scoreboard first after sophomore Becky Schmidt laid a beautiful pass behind the Tech defense that Buckel ran onto and shot into the lower corner. The goal at 4:36 of the first half was her first of the season.
Freshman Lindsey Van Rooy tied the game for the Huskies with a shot over the head of NMU goalie Jessica Baker from 30 yards out at 12:48.
The Wildcats would add two more goals over a four minute span mid-way through the first half.
Northern would net the lone goal in the second half. Sophomore Amelia Johnson fired a shot into the side netting from the corner of the penalty box thanks to an assist from Buckel.
Sophomore Jessica Baker gave up one goal and made two saves in the win for the Wildcats. Freshman MaryBeth Spoehr allowed all four goals and made eight saves in the loss.
NMU finished with a 19-8 advantage in shots.
