Lt. Governor Calley visits NMU
Lieutenant Governor Brian Calley visited Northern Michigan University today, and he had a special message for those in attendance.
He says with unemployment down from 14% to 9% recently, the future is positive.
Calley wanted to assure students that Michigan is in a position for further growth. He expanded on Michigan’s many successes in the hopes that many graduates will consider staying in Michigan once they complete their education.
“Michigan is the comeback state,” he said. “I want to talk about the success and what has happened already but then really launch back into the idea that we cannot be complacent, that we have a lot more work to do and we have to focus in on those goals for the future.”
“I definitely plan to stay,” NMU student Alanna Hamel said. “There’s a lot of talk about how there are limited options for teachers right now, however, I feel that being in science that, that will have a high demand, so I am pretty confident about finding a good job.”
Some of the state’s successes Lt. Gov. Calley mentioned were $600 million dollars in the rainy day fund and the ability to now pay off debt. The state has had population growth in recent years, home sales are up and every sector other than the government has added jobs.
