Sall introduced at NMU

If Northern Michigan University wanted to make some noise hiring a new head men’s basketball coach, they certainly did just that. The Wildcats hired Bill Sall away from Ferris State University, a school that Northern plays in the GLIAC North Division.

Sall was introduced as the teams new head coach on Monday. He spent the last eleven years as the head coach at Ferris State.

The Bulldogs won four GLIAC North titles and made the NCAA Tournament three times with Sall in charge. When it came to making his decision to either move to Marquette or stay in Big Rapids, Sall contacted several of his peers- and they all said the same thing.

“I talked to a lot of coaches and I wanted to ask them their opinion on if this is a good move? Is this a good spot? It was amazing how many coaches I trust said this is a good move for you,” Sall went on to say.

Over 90 different coaches spanning the Division I, II, and III levels all applied for the job. NMU Athletic Director Forrest Karr and a search committee spent the last six weeks going through each of the coaching candidates.

In the end, Karr believes that he and the committee made the right decision in hiring Sall.

“When I look at head coaches, one of the things I’ve noticed over the years that leads to success is someone who is very detail oriented,” Karr said. “He (Sall) has great energy and a great work ethic- he’s a tireless worker.”

“For us at Northern, this is really a great hire,” said Troy Mattson, the head coach of the women’s basketball program and a member of the search committee. “I’m just looking forward to working together with him (Sall).”
