Coreau ready for shot in pros
Former Northern Michigan University goaltender Jared Coreau signed a three-year contract with the Detroit Red Wings on Wednesday.
Coreau is preparing to move to Detroit and start his career in the pros.
Seven different NHL teams were interested in the 6’5” goalie. Coreau narrowed his list down from seven to two teams- Detroit and Winnipeg.
In the end, he decided to sign with the team he grew up rooting against as a youngster in Ontario.
“A lot of teams I talked to they just said they want to do it a certain way, they want to grow their players internally”, said Coreau.
“In Detroit they already do that and that is a big thing for me because I am a big believer in development.”
Coreau will spend the rest of the Red Wings regular season in Detroit, working with the team during practice and taking in games at Joe Louis Arena.
The Ontario native has been to the Motor City already to meet his new teammates and Coreau’s former team in Marquette is excited to see what their former goalie can do at the next level.
“Nobody works harder than Jared,” said Walt Kyle, the head coach of the NMU hockey team.
“We really knew a year ago that there was a possibility for this to happen. In all reality this is the way college hockey is today and we couldn’t be happier for him.”
Coreau will battle for playing time against two other Red Wings prospects, Thomas McCollum and Petr Mrazek.
