Hematites shut down varsity football for the year

ISHPEMING — Ishpeming Public Schools will not be having a varsity football team this season.

Despite making the playoffs in 2019,  the school felt like they didn’t have the numbers to compete with other schools around the area.

“We decided we didn’t want to bring freshman up because that’s too big of a step for our freshman to be playing against  varsity kids, juniors and seniors,” said Terry Roberts, Athletic Director at Ishpeming High School. “We didn’t have enough sophomores that we felt that could play up there and that wanted to play up there at the varsity level.”

Roberts says he is hoping that the juniors stay involved with the jv team and that the school is currently looking for jv games so that the kids can develop and possibly bring back the varsity football team next year.
