Your 2020 UP Team of the Year: Munising Cheer!
In a close championship match-up between Munising Cheer and Munising Boys’ Basketball, it ended up being the girls, the cheer team, the dominant force throughout the entirety of this bracket that ended up walking away with the title of 2020 UP Team of the Year. The Munising Cheer team ended up receiving the most votes of any team in 5 of the 6 total rounds in this tournament. The only time the team did not receive the most votes was in the Sweet 16, where Munising barely walked away with a win, earning only 6 votes more than their opponents for that round, Northern Michigan Volleyball.
Despite that hiccup, Munising Cheer dominated everywhere else in the bracket, just like they did this past season. The Munising Cheer team won districts for the second year in a row, and made it all the way to the state finals, earning 5th place honors in the state championships. Junior Alexis Walther said “We knew that winning districts this year was going to be tough, and we knew that it wasn’t going to be given to us. You know, the competition before districts, we had our first loss of the season. It was really hard on us. We knew we had to come back and be stronger, and we gave everything we had at districts, and we got it!”
Head Coach, Nicole Lasak wants this team to be an ambassador for their sport. She wants her team, her girls, her athletes to represent the sport well and show that, although cheer may not receive all the press it deserves, through hard work, strong results, and dedicated fans, this sport can continue to grow throughout Michigan as it has for the last few years.
Congratulations to the Munising Cheer team on a fantastic season! MUNISING CHEER IS OUR 2020 UP TEAM OF THE YEAR!
