MACKINAC COUNTY — Mackinac County Sheriff’s Deputies and Michigan State Police are investigating a structure fire which occurred on Bois Blanc Island in Mackinac County on Sunday, September 23rd.

Deputies and Fire units were called to the scene at around 11:10AM for a report of smoke coming from the island that was seen from Cheboygan. Another report came from an individual who was walking down the road near the fire and was severely burned. Bois Blanc Township Fire and Rescue as well as a Deputy from the Sheriff’s office responded.

59–year–old Kevin McCormack and 51–year–old Caroline Klautky–McCormack were injured in the fire at their cabin on Bois Blanc Island. Both subjects were flown to a burn unit downstate.

Kevin McCormack later died at a downstate hospital. Caroline Klautky–McCormack remains hospitalized and is expected to recover.

From preliminary indications, there was an accidental propane explosion in the home causing the extensive fire and damage. No other information is available at this time. More will be released when the investigation yields more information.
