IRONWOOD TOWNSHIP — A 35-year-old Ironwood man is in custody after facing multiple charges after his vehicle struck a Gogebic County Sheriff’s Deputy at at approximately 9:30 P.M. on Friday, July 20th.

The Deputy was directing traffic at an accident scene on Vanderhagen Road near Sunset in Ironwood Township. According to the report, the suspect attempted to drive through the accident scene and around a wrecker, striking the deputy on the side of his torso, causing him to spin around. The Deputy was able to enter his patrol vehicle and briefly pursue the suspect.

The suspect was later arrested and charged with Operating while Intoxicated, Fleeing and Eluding, Failure to yield to a stationary emergency vehicle and failure to submit to a preliminary breath test.

His name will not be released until after his arraignment. The deputy was not injured but was examined at Aspirus Ironwood Hospital as a precautionary measure. Both wreckers at the accident scene and the patrol car had their emergency lights activated and the Deputy was wearing a reflective vest.
