The names of the people involved in the accident have been released.

The pedestrian has been identified as 33 year-old Cory DeRocha of Palmer. The driver of the Honda passenger car was identified as 19 year-old Janey Christiansen of Iron Mountain.

DeRocha was riding in a vehicle traveling northbound on M-95 with a friend when an argument occurred. The friend pulled the vehicle over to the side of the road. DeRocha exited the vehicle and either walked or an into the path of an oncoming southbound Honda, driven by Christiansen.

DeRocha was struck head on by the Honda and was trapped underneath. Marquette County Sheriff’s Office Rescue 131 utilized equipment to lift the vehicle and extricate DeRocha.

DeRocha was pronounced dead at the scene. Icy roads and low visibility were factors in the fatal accident.

The Michigan State Police Negaunee Post, Humboldt Township Fire Department, Humboldt Township First Responders and UPHS – Bell Ambulance assisted on the scene. The crash still remains under investigation.


HUMBOLDT TOWNSHIP — One person is in the hospital after being struck by a vehicle in Humboldt Township Thursday night.

At 10:00 p.m., the Marquette County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to a one-vehicle accident involving a pedestrian on M-95, south of County Road FH. A southbound Honda passenger car struck a pedestrian that was in the roadway.

The pedestrian was transported to UPHS – Marquette. M-95 was reduced to one lane for three hours while the scene was investigated.

The accident remains under investigation.
