Hematites’ Holmgren commits to Northern Michigan

ISHPEMING — Hematites’ basketball player Hart Holmgren announced on his Twitter account that he has committed to join the Northern Michigan men’s basketball team. He’s coming off a stellar junior year, averaging just under 20 points and 10 rebounds, earning him a spot on the Class ABC First Team. He says it was great to tell his parents that he wouldn’t be going too far for college.

“They were definitely excited. All my friends and family are going to come and watch the games. It’s going to be a fun time. I know Northern has a great school. I got a chance to meet most of the guys on the team. I know it’s a great group of guys. I really like the coaches, Coach Sall and Coach Belt. I have good camaraderie with them. It was an easy decision for me,” Holmgren said.

Holmgren will be one of three Yoopers on the team as he joins Iron Mountain’s Carson Wonders and North Central’s Marcus Krachinski, who will be on this year’s Wildcats team. He hopes to continue to add some U.P. flavor to the NMU squad.

“I am excited to join Wonders and Krachinski because I know them a little bit. I think I’m going to fit in as a perimeter player. I think I’ll get along with the guys well. It means a lot to me. I get to represent my family and the school. It’s a great community. I’m glad I get to continue to be a part of it just going to Marquette,” said Holmgren.

Holmgren will be majoring in pre-med at Northern Michigan.
