Police investigating fatal one-vehicle accident

RABAR TOWNSHIP –The Chippewa County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a fatal one-vehicle accident that occurred over the weekend.

Sheriff’s Deputies located a pick-up truck in a ditch on M-48 near Townline Road in Rabar Township on December 3rd. Officials observed that the truck was traveling south on M-48 when the vehicle went off the road, striking the ditch and a large rock before coming to a rest on its side.

The driver was identified as 35-year old Benjamin Ray Hilts of Detour, Michigan. Hilts was not wearing a seat belt and was pronounced dead at the scene. Officials believe speed and alcohol were factors in the incident.

The incident remains under investigation. The Chippewa County Sheriffs Deputies were assisted by the Michigan DNR, the Michigan State Police, Rabar Fire and Detour Fire and EMS.
