Senator Peters talks gun control
WASHINGTON — The City of Orlando is still grieving from last week’s horrific shooting at a gay nightclub where 49 people lost their lives.
In Washington, Democrats and Republicans have introduced four different pieces of gun control legislation, none of which have passed.
Lawmakers on both sides of the isle proposed different looking bills. Democrats support a ‘No Fly, No Buy’ bill, which would prevent anyone on the No Fly List from purchasing a firearm.
Republicans are proposing a three-day waiting period for people with suspected ties to terrorism. We recently talked with Michigan Senator Gary Peters about the gun control issue and what he thinks needs to be done.
“I’m a gun owner myself. This is not about being against guns. I believe that guns are an important part of who we are and part of our culture,” said Peters.
“We shouldn’t step back and not do anything. I think we have to step up and move forward. One of those areas is just some common sense gun regulation to make sure we keep weapons out of the hands of folks who intend to do us harm,” he added.
President Obama weighed in on the four failed bills earlier today. Obama tweeted, “Gun violence requires more than moments of silence. It requires action. In failing that test, the Senate failed the American people.”
