Falling for gourmet caramel apples
MARQUETTE — Fall apple season brings caramel apples in the droves to stores across the U.P. The crave for gourmet apples is also growing in popularity.
Candy apples, caramel apples or taffy apples as they are affectionately known, got their first start back in 1908. The toppings have changed and evolved over the years with gourmet taffy apples now being the “IN” thing.
“We make our caramel apples with Honey Crisp apples. We have a regular caramel plain apple, we also have an Oreo one, all nut one, turtle, and then we have an everything apple which has chunks of Oreos, pretzels, salt, all sort of stuff and then we also have our salted caramel apple,” said Austin Gatz, Donckers store manager.
Taffy apples are popular this time of season because it is officially apple harvest season. If you are a taffy apple lover, the season ends pretty quickly, so stock up.
“Candy Apples are a Halloween specialty up here and we will stop selling them on Halloween, that will be the last day we sell them as we get ready for Christmas,” continued Gatz.
Halloween candy corn is always a favorite and if you want to be adventurous, you can try the Pumpkin Fudge or many of the other specialty items available.
