MARQUETTE — In the first few moments of the new year Marquette Police were called to an alcohol related stabbing that occurred near a bar. The incident left one person hospitalized and another jailed, Marquette Police Detective Sergeant Marty Munger tells ABC 10.

Around 1:30a.m. this morning a male suspect was escorted from Marquette Police Headquarters in handcuffs and placed inside a police car for the one block ride to the Marquette County Jail.

The other male victim was transported by ambulance to U.P. Health System Marquette for treatment of a stab wound, and the injuries are not believed to be life threatening, Sgt. Munger said. The victim reportedly walked to the ambulance.

Sgt. Munger said alcohol contributed to the incident. The names of the two young men involved have not been released pending further investigation and authorization of charges by the Marquette County Prosecutor’s Office.

An evidence technician was called to process the scene. The stabbing was reported about 5 to 10 minutes into the New Year and occurred just minutes after the annual ball drop.

Police said the stabbing happened somewhere in the area behind Flanagan’s Bar, located at 429 West Washington St. across from the Ramada Inn. ABC 10 will bring more details as they are released.

Bar patrons said they heard there had been a stabbing incident outside behind the parking lot, but continued their New Year celebration inside as outdoor wind chill temps were about 20 below zero.
