Huskies prep for GLI Tournament
HOUGHTON, Mich. – The Michigan Tech hockey team was back together Christmas Day in Ann Arbor, where they practiced at the home of their Great Lakes Invitational semifinal foe, the University of Michigan.
These two teams met two months ago in Houghton. The Huskies won both games against the Wolverines. As special as it was playing outdoors a year ago, Mel Pearson is excited to be back inside the Joe, where he has had a few memorable moments both as a coach and as a player.
“I was fortunate I believe to play the first GLI in that building back in the day,” said Pearson. “I’ve been there quite a bit, seen a lot of great games, and experienced a neat moments there. I think our team is really excited to get down there, with this year’s field, it’s outstanding. It’s going to be a great tournament, great setting, and we’re looking forward to it.”
“I watched the GLI the year before I came here when they won it,” said MTU forward Mike Neville. “I went down to Joe Louis (Arena) with my dad and we got to watch the Michigan Tech guys bring it home. Last year was pretty special outside and I’m looking forward to playing on the Joe Louis (Arena) ice.”
“It’s great to play in NHL arenas. The atmosphere that they create is second to none,” said Huskies defenseman Shane Hanna. “We get to play Michigan, so I can’t wait.”
